Banana Republic - Sequestered

Sequestration (n) – (def) A. …a legal writ authorizing a sheriff or commissioner to take into custody the property of a defendant who is in contempt until he complies with the orders of a court. B. a deposit whereby a neutral depository agrees to hold property in litigation and restore it to the party to whom it adjudged to belong.

Today is supposed to be the day when the clock stops and the government grinds to a halt. The dreaded day of Sequester has arrived. As of this writing; on Wednesday; I don’t believe that either side will let the hour pass without some meaningless type of bandage being applied; thus kicking the can further down the road without resolving anything. These are, after all, politicians, and as such, doing something meaningful would be just too risky. So, here are some solutions which immediately spring to mind- my mind being a veritable spring of ideas.

First option: The amount of the money equals the amount of the Bush Era tax cuts. In keeping with the Conservative view of what we need and what we don’t; I don’t need ‘em. Scrap ‘em and problem is solved.

Second option: The money in question was borrowed from China, and in accordance with Webster’s Ninth (sounds like a symphony- especially if you like words) a sequestering of the funds is when the money is held until it is determined to whom it rightfully belongs. Well, we borrowed it- so it’s China’s money. We are not using it- so just write them a check. This will reduce our National Debt by $85 billion dollars in one day, and  affect the stock market in a positive way as we flex our financial acumen, highlighting our ability to repay our debts. Then, on Saturday; while everyone is sleeping; just borrow the $85 billion back from China. They’ll have no problem lending it to us. Hell, we’re good customers.

I know that these ideas are just off the top of my head, and as such require further study. And, with the $85 billion we will be artificially saving by using either one of the above methods, we can create some high paying jobs to study the problem a little more. Until the next time.

By the way, if you recognize your Congressman, or Senator, in the picture above, I urge you to not waste your time in calling. You see, there’s no one home.

Secret Ballot - 101

For those who haven’t heard, we here in the United States, have the right to vote a secret ballot. Simply put; that means that no-one can compel you to tell them for whom you have cast your vote. This is a good thing. It safeguards our Democratic Republic in a very basic way. It prevents “gridlock” amongst the populace, and thus prevents “we the people” from coming to loggerheads with one another, thereby giving all power to the elected officials who will them only represent about half of the nation’s views, and needs. This is a bad thing.

But, lately, we have all seem to forgotten that. Each election cycle reveals a further split; right down the middle; of our national spirit. The repercussions of this are that there is a lack of civil discourse in the land. There is a stagnation of solutions to the many problems which we all face, while there is a proliferation of propaganda from both sides, in a further effort to divide us; to conquer us; to keep us powerless to effect any change. And, with the aid of the 24/7 news cycle; as well as the blogosphere; they seem to be doing a damn good job of it, too.
There’s a lot at stake in the coming election. Let’s all take a step back and breathe a bit before pulling that lever, punching the card, or marking your ballot. But, most importantly; let this election be a lesson to us in what not to expect of our elected officials. We do not expect to spend the majority of the next 4 years with a partisan, obstructionist Congress, or Senate.

As usual, I urge you all to wait until after the election and then phone, e-mail, or fax your concerns for America to your Congressional Representative, as well as your Senators. Let them know that you hold them responsible for both the successes; and failures; of the 4 years.
Remember, when you pull that lever on Election Day, you are hiring; or retaining; an employee. That employee has benefits which the average American only dreams of these days. Health Care, paid for by you; a very generous Retirement system, paid for by you; and all the tax loopholes necessary to wash clean the honorariums which they receive in addition to the salary of about $180,000; plus expenses; all at a time when you yourself may be struggling to find employment, or keep your home.

So, instead of screaming at one another, let’s be quiet for the next 2 weeks and ponder one of the most important decisions which we, the people, will probably ever be called upon to make in our lifetimes. And when all is said and done; regardless of who wins the election; we, the people are all we really have to count upon. Let’s never allow ourselves to forget that.

The Bus

I can think of nothing that says "I am completely out of touch with the people" more than this bus does. Aside from the cost of this behemouth, the excuses of security and privacy are bogus when you consider that this bus is being lead, and followed by, other security vehicles, fully equipped to handle just about anything that may come up. And let's not forget the air cover. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is coming within 50 feet of this bus.

I think the President inherited a lousy job, with every thing imaginable going wrong, even before he took office. But I have to tell you that I am sorely disappointed with his Presidency. Having lost control of his own party in Congress, while holding a majority in the Senate, and still getting nothing done which was promised in 2008, I do not think that I would be re-miss in stating that he just might need this bus after all!

I believe the American people need to demand that all of the former Presidents, who are still living today, form a committee to work in tandem and undo the mess which they have helped to create. A team composed of these former presidents, who are still all on the payroll, would represent both parties, and may be the only way to end the partisan politics and gridlock which are bringing America to its knees. It is an unusual solution to be sure, but then again, these are unusual times.

P.S. I just saw that the 2 buses- there are 2 buses- were made in Canada, while the President travels the country preaching job creation. You cannot make this stuff up! Robert / Wednesday / August 17, 2011
