Happy New Year Baby!

Well, it’s New Year’s once again, with people all over making promises which they’ll never keep. I don’t recall ever having made a New Year’s resolution; not that I couldn’t use some reforming in certain aspects; but rather that I knew I wouldn’t be keeping them, so why kid myself? But, seriously, I do have some goals in mind for the New Year, among them some changes to this blog. I’m just not sure what they will be; if any.

I find that making myself post something each day diminishes the quality of what I write. So, to that end, I may only post three, or four times, per week. I will, of course, stick to a book review each week; as well as a movie; and a music video with some related commentary. If I can, I’ll post the other days. I have some very bad arthritic pain which makes it difficult to type; or sit at the keyboard; for too long a period of time. The average 2 page review, including research of names etc., takes about an hour, sometimes more. So, doing this daily actually hurts! But, being the compulsive person that I am, we will have to wait and see to find out what I actually decide upon.

I do know this; having this blog gives me focus and purpose; two commodities which I value more and more as I get older. It also keeps me from bothering Sue too much...

So, thanks for reading, and Happy New Years from us both  as I enter into my fifth year of Reviewing Rooftops! Wait… that can’t be right. I mean a fifth year of Rooftop Reviews. Happy New Year and Good Health to all in 2013!

A Dinosaur In a Changing World

I'm not very keen on "changes"; I tend to like things to remain sort of "static". Friday night, when I went to post for Saturday, I was confronted by the new “blogspot” changes, which are not at all welcome by me. For a few brief moments I considered the possibility of quitting. But that's not really my style, so I'm going to shoulder on; hopefully with some success as I navigate the unknown. Bear with me as I play the part of “dinosaur" in this brave new world. Today I will be toying with the "whistles and bells" as I learn the new ropes. Of course, if I were to watch the tutorial on the site it may be of some help. But I hate doing that. I have never been one for following the instructions; instead I curse my way through to the finish. It's sort of like On the Job Training, that old euphemism for being thrown into the fire, hoping to escape getting burned in the process.  And we all know how that works out! So, bear with me as I get used to these changes.

Fall in My Yard

The elephant ears were 7 foot tall,
They stood to defy the arrival of fall.
But now they don’t seem so tall at all,
As they await the coming of winter.

The magnolia tree with its blossoms white,
Fading away with summer’s light.
Will be back next year, to my delight,
After the cold days of winter.

The little flowers that fill the bed,
the chill in the air is something they dread.
There’ll be something else comes spring in their stead,
After the passing of winter.

We are young, the cycle’s old,
This wandering from heat to cold.
Around a sun of shining gold
Into the grips of winter.

What is this loss I seem to feel,
When the sun begins to peel
The veneer of warmth which felt so real,
Laying us bare to winter?
