Our clock stopped ringing about 10 months ago. I tried to re-set it, etc. Found that the little piece which controls the chimes had broken due to age. The part is cheap, but the labor to replace it is about $750. The clock cost about $5,000 in 1969.
But due to people not wanting them anymore, you can buy a working one for $450 plus $250 for shipping. So, it's not really worth the cost of fixing. Notice that the clock keeps excellent time, even the Moon is exactly where it should be. Day 15 of the Lunar Cycle, a full Moon.
Here is why I am posting this. Without that broken piece it is physically impossible for this clock to ring. Yet, 2 weeks ago it began to ring, 11 hourly gongs at 10:45, or 12 at 12:30. Sitting here finishing my lunch and at 5 minutes to one it rang 1 gong for 1 o'clock.
I had always wanted a Grandfather clock since Kindergarten. But it was never a financial option for me. And now it makes no sense to repair it for twice its current market value. But I still love it. I actually touch it each time I pass it. I still talk to it. And I can only think that my love for it is what is making it ring again, in spite of it being technically impossible. And when it does ring I give it an extra hug. 🙂
Maybe it's getting close to Halloween and it's haunted? 🤔 Nah. I think it's the love. I have e-mailed my "clock guy" at Good Time Watch and Clock Repair and he has no explanation as to why it is doing this. His advice is to keep on loving it. So, that's the plan. ❤️
